What are common signs of water damage?
There are plenty of reasons why water damage might occur. Water heater failure, burst pipes, a toilet that has overflowed, and sump pump failure are some of the more obvious reasons. But these are not the only culprits of water damage.
A hidden leak could be occurring in your house without you knowing. These phantom leaks can cause extensive damage to your home and you may not notice until its too late. Here are some places you can detect water damage in your home to ensure this doesn’t happen to you:
- Inspect Pipes
Surveying the pipes in your laundry room, bathroom, or kitchen regularly is the best way to spot water damage. While looking, try to spot any wet areas or small puddles of water. These could be indicators of either a leak or water damage. When you do this, you may find water stains.
- Check all the floors
This is very important to do if you’re looking for water damage. When doing this, look for warped flooring. A warped floor is a strong indication of water damage. Also, try to find any spots stains on the floor or in the carpet. Keep in mind that damp carpet is a cesspool for mold and mildew.
- Check your walls
If you see or feel any swollen or cracked spots in your drywall this can be a sign of water damage. Check the door frames as well.
- Check the attic and roof
Your attic and roof could be harboring a hidden leak as well. Be sure to investigate occasionally for leaks, water spots, or water stains. Also, don’t forget about chimneys and vents. While you’re in your attic, make sure it has proper ventilation and is dry.
