The "easy install" instructions that come with most garbage disposals ask you to hold the disposal and force it up into the opening with one hand while you tighten a retaining ring with the other. Perhaps possible for Superman, but not for everyone. Try this instead.
Steps
- Remove the existing disposal or follow the instructions to install a new sink ring.
- Wire up the new disposal.
- Find: a partner; a small scissors jack (probably from your car); something sturdy to take up most of the room between the bottom of the cabinet and the bottom of the disposer (I used a small tub of wallboard compound); and a short length of 2 x 4.
- Put the scissors jack on whatever space maker you've found, the fully collapsed jack on top of that and the 2 x 4 on top of the jack.
- Have your assistant help you lift the disposal onto the 2 x 4, assuring that it rests of the frame rather than the flimsy bottom and that the power cord is not crimped.
- Have your assistant look down through the top of the sink, grasps the collar of the disposer and guide you to line the disposer up with the hole.
- Orient the disposer so that its drain is facing the right way and the retaining ring is turned to engage the three ramps. (It helps to practice this connection on the new ring and holder before you begin.)
- Operate the jack to lift the disposal into position with your assistant verifying that it is lined up perfectly.
- Rotate the retaining ring so that all three tabs click over the latches.
- Connect the drain and optional dishwasher drain.
Tips
- Use a jack to hold up the garbage disposal, or this will be real hard!
Warnings
- If you're attaching a dishwasher drain, be sure to knock out the seal before attaching the hose.
